International Whale Celebration goes down a storm!

Back in July we held the first ever International Whale Celebreation specifically to coincide with the 63rd annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission on the channel island of Jersey, UK.

The goal was to encourage locals to speak up for whales and raise awareness of illegal whaling operations that are carried out by certain nations; despite the ban on commercial whaling established in 1986.  And also to do this in a fun and creative way, our mantra being; Whales should be CELEBRATED; Not slaughtered!

Thanks to an army of whale angels who donated their time, money, accomodations, vehicles, vegetables and everything else in between we managed to pull off not one, two but six events despite only visiting Jersey once before the week!  Just shows what you can do with the power of the pod!

We couldn’t have done it without…

The support and laughter provided by Surfers for Cetaceans who came all the way from Australia and California, premiering their amazing new documentary Minds in the Water and unleashing their creative talents on the tiny island (in the form of surfing, painting, documenting, cooking and rapping!)….

Jersey locals & businesses: Darren, Jackie, Pat @ the Harbour Gallery,  Andy, Mike, Amanda, Nina & Gordie Blake, Laneez surf school, Quiksilver surf school, the Watersplash, Jersey Evening Post, Jersey Peeps, BBC Jersey, Jersey Arts Centre, Sheila and the Isis Centre, Kat and the riding centre, Jersey Surfboard Club, Garry the parking attendant, Paperclicks, B&Q, Niall, Cowshed music and artists Rick Jones, Frankie Davies and Lloyd Yates, Grassroots festival, plus many MANY more!

All the NGOs and organisations there to speak up for and on behalf of the whales – committed to conserving them and their habitat.  Paul Watson and his fleet of Sea Shepherd volunteers taking a constant stand outside the meeting.

Finally all the ladies, that came forth from all corners of the globe for this cause – Innes, Nao,  Nicole, Madeleine, Babs, Georgie – cementing our vision that the time is NOW for women to unite in order to protect our oceanic family.

Surfers for Cetaceans was so impressed with the events tha Women for Whales put together during that final week of IWC63 and we continue to be stoked about what W4W is building and achieving.

Thank you for your upbeat, diligent and fun loving contribution to the Whale freedom cause and being part of the S4C family x

at the moment we are touring Minds in the Water in the LA region and preparing our next transparentsevoyage down the coast of California to meet with local community and marine activists..and the whales themselves. Looking forward to seeing Natalie Fox join us and working alongside W4W in Panama at the next IWC and into the future for a healthy Ocean
